A REVISION STRATEGY

April 13, 2010

The thing to remember – which is crucial – is that the Graduate Diploma in Law is a highly predictable examination. It is therefore not a lottery!!

You can more-or-less predict what questions will appear in each paper months before you are due to sit it. For example, if you are doing the GDl at BPP Law School, you will do a three-hour paper in each of the foundation subjects apart from EU law.

Generally, you will need to answer 3 one-hour questions. The vast majority of questions will be problem questions, although at the time of publication of this article, one of the questions in Criminal and Equity and Trusts were essays, and for Constitutional and Administrative Law, you had to answer one problem question from each of three sections.

The rubric will read something like ths. However, you must consult past papers for actual accurate wording.

EXAMPLE RUBRIC

Time allowed: 3 hours (2 hours 45 minutes + 15 minutes reading time).

Candidates must attempt three questions from this seven question paper.

Instructions to candidates

Student Reference Number

Write your student reference number on the front cover of every answer booklet you use. You should NOT write your name anywhere on the answer booklet.

Questions

Answer THREE of the following SEVEN questions.

Write in blue or black ink in the answer book provided. Start each answer on a new page. Answers made elsewhere, such as on rough paper, will not be marked.

Time

You have 15 minutes reading time. During this period you may annotate the question paper, make notes on the rough paper provided and consult the permitted materials. You then have 2 hours 45 minutes to complete the examination.

DO NOT WRITE IN YOUR ANSWER BOOKLET DURING THE 15 MINUTES READING TIME.

STOP WRITING IMMEDIATELY UPON BEING INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY THE INVIGILATOR AT THE END OF THE EXAMINATION. A FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CONSTITUTE CHEATING.

Permitted materials

The only materials permitted are:

[Statute Book if relevant]

English Language Dictionary;

English/Foreign Language Dictionary.

The dictionaries must be in book, not electronic form; law dictionaries and Latin dictionaries are not permitted.

THERE MUST BE NO ANNOTATION WITHIN THE PERMITTED MATERIALS.
